The Brief

The brief was incredibly simple – something we’ve never seen before, that fits the modern architecture, and embraces connectivity, both digital and physical, and interaction. No theme or style was off the table, so long as it was used in an interesting and innovative way, and could create word-of-mouth and social media sharing. Impactful features would be preferred over standard coverage – something that can get people talking.

What We Did

We took a simple Christmas motif, the mistletoe branch and berries, and replicated these in giant scale, using the mistletoe branches as peripheral decorations to tease our main feature piece – the giant kissing tree. Standing at around 18m tall, the tree reached right up to the roof, and became the main focus of the switch on and Christmas season due to its interactivity.

When two people kissed at the bottom of the tree, beneath the mistletoe suspended there, the tree lights changed colour from white to red, the change flowing from the bottom of the tree right to the top, and then into the permanent lighting across the entire roof of the centre! For those less keen on public displays of affection, a handshake could produce a similar effect, so even platonic relationships could be celebrated.
